June 20, 2005
tom.com will offer easy-to-use subscription-based video services to chinese consumers
Espoo, Finland - Nokia supplies its Nokia Media Charger video service technology to TOM Online Inc, a leading service provider in China. Nokia Media Charger technology will enable TOM Online's Internet portal www.tom.com to provide four multimedia channels to the Chinese market - Movies, Cartoons, Music and Interviews.
Nokia Media Charger enables the creation of subscription-based services to deliver media-rich content to Nokia's Series 60 smartphones over existing GSM, EDGE, and WCDMA cellular networks. The user can select and subscribe to the channels offered, and the content is automatically delivered to his or her mobile phone at low network usage times, e.g. during the night. After the content has been delivered, it can be accessed and enjoyed by the user at any time.
"TOM Online has an abundance of informative and entertaining materials that are excellent for media streaming applications," says Wang Lei Lei, TOM Online Chief Executive Officer. "By putting our popular content on Nokia Media Charger we have made it possible for our users to enjoy the multimedia experience that only cutting edge technologies could deliver. It has not only opened up a whole new world of mobile entertainment but it will also help TOM Online keep its leading position in the run-up to 3G."
"TV content going mobile is a natural extension of mobilizing media consumption. In addition to DVB-H based broadcast and IP streaming over cellular networks, Nokia Media Charger brings a complementing technology to offer well-packaged content services and extending media brands into the mobile space," says Juha Salo, Director, Nokia Ventures Organization. "This is an exciting case to deliver video services in the Chinese market."
tom.com has started bringing the advanced video streaming experience to its customers during May 2005 and the service is initially available for Nokia 6681 phones.
