Nokia and the EC: Building a Market for "Greener" Products
June 28, 2004

Helsinki, Finland - Nokia and the European Commission announced plans to cooperate in a pilot project under the Commission's Integrated Product Policy (IPP).  The IPP is an environmental initiative to consider the performance of products and services across their life cycle, with long-term goals including the creation of a market for more environmentally friendly products in the European Union. The EC plans to conduct two pilot projects, based on proposals provided by Nokia and Carrefour.

Margot Wallström, European Environment Commissioner welcomed the selection:  "These projects help bring this new policy to life. We need more sustainable products if we are to meet our environmental goals and improve our quality of life. I am delighted that two big European companies support this approach and that they are prepared to participate in projects that aim to improve the environmental performance and the sustainable use of these products throughout their life-cycle. I am convinced that this is the way of the future."

The cooperation will draw on Nokia´s environmental work based on life-cycle thinking, and the influence of this mindset on Nokia's product development. "When we create products, we take their entire life-span into account from design and manufacture through to recycling," explained Veli Sundbäck, Senior Vice President, Corporate Relations and Responsibility at Nokia.  "We believe this is vital from the environmental and financial standpoint, and we are looking forward to sharing our experiences with the European Commission and other stakeholders."
