Nokia supplies Thailand's DTAC with high-capacity i-series mobile switches
May 11, 2004
Nokia MSCi's bring the flexibility to optimize DTAC's fast-growing network.
Total Access Communication Plc (DTAC), Thailand's leading provider of mobile multimedia services has awarded Nokia a contract to supply high-capacity Nokia "i-series" Mobile Switching Centers (MSCi's) for DTAC's GSM/GPRS/EDGE 1800 core network.
DTAC will upgrade the entire core network to Nokia "i-series" (MSCi's). Nokia will also provide planning, installation, commissioning and integration services.
The Nokia MSCi is built to cope with the most demanding mobile traffic generated in the densest urban networks. It provides significant capacity increases to the existing capacity and allows operators to optimize their growing networks with Nokia's range of complementary high-capacity products, including transit switches. The high subscriber capacity of Nokia "i-series" products bring significant savings for network operators by reducing the number of elements required.
"DTAC has Thailand's most advanced network delivering the best service to meet customers' growing demands," said Somlak Sachjapinan, Chief Technology Officer, Total Access Communication. "With the Nokia MSCi upgrade, we can ensure that DTAC customers will get the best network quality and latest application and services."
"Nokia is proud to provide its full solution and services to upgrade DTAC's network to be 3G ready by July 2004," said Suwit Pruckwattananon, Account Director for DTAC, Networks, Nokia Thailand. "With the Nokia MSCi, DTAC will have a solid foundation to offer its subscribers a smooth migration path from voice to IP-based multimedia services in the future."
Having collaborated with DTAC since the early 1990s, Nokia is the sole supplier of mobile network infrastructure to DTAC. To date, Nokia has supplied DTAC with complete mobile network systems and solutions comprising GSM and GPRS core network and GSM/EDGE radio networks.

Note to Editors
The "i-series" Mobile Switching Centre (MSCi) provides significant increases in capacity and is capable of handling up to 600,000 subscribers.
Operators can also fully use sophisticated features, such as Intelligent Network (IN)-based services, because Nokia's switches can operate at maximum capacity even if all the calls in the network require an IN service. Nokia's MSCi is built to cope with the most demanding mobility management traffic generated in the densest city networks.
The "i-series" also includes high-capacity products for the Home Location Register (HLR) capable of supporting 1.2 million subscribers. With Nokia's expanded range of complementary high-capacity products for urban and rural networks, plus transit switching, the "i-series" gives GSM operators complete flexibility to optimize their growing networks.
