Bordeaux goes TETRA with Nokia and Amec Spie
November 13, 2003
Nokia is to provide its digital TETRA professional mobile radio system to Amec Spie Communications for the Communauté Urbaine de Bordeaux - the Bordeaux metropolitan area authority - in France. The network, to be implemented by Amec Spie, will serve the administrators in the city of Bordeaux and its suburbs, and it is planned to be in operation by the end of 2003.
The Nokia TETRA System will eventually serve 10,000 users, and it will replace the analog professional mobile network currently used by the Bordeaux metropolitan area. The system will greatly enhance the cooperation between the metropolitan authorities and their partners, giving city administrators better opportunities to react to exceptional events, such as floods or storms.
The Bordeaux metropolitan area authority selected Amec Spie Communications as the prime contractor to integrate the Nokia TETRA System with PABX systems and to create a fully integrated communications system for public administration. Nokia will provide its TETRA solution, including TETRA switching equipment, base stations, and a dispatcher station. Nokia will be the sole TETRA supplier and will support Amec Spie Communications in the implementation phase, as well as provide care services.
The Bordeaux metropolitan area authority is the fourth largest in France, and it administrates 660,000 people in 27 nearby cities in the southwest of the country.
"The Communauté Urbaine de Bordeaux is keen to use this high-performance network which will improve not only the efficiency of the departments but also the relationships with our partners," says Patrick Matignon, Head of New Technologies, Bordeaux metropolitan area authority.
"This has been a real opportunity for Amec Spie Communications to highlight its capability to deliver value-added services such as customized applications and to provide solutions for interoperability between the TETRA network and existing heterogeneous PABX platforms," says Gérard Bouzou, Marketing and Communications Director, Amec Spie Communications.
"Nokia and Amec Spie Communications have combined their skills to propose to the Bordeaux metropolitan area authority a system that integrates professional mobile communications with fixed communications," says Vincent Julien, Account Manager, Professional Mobile Radio, Nokia Networks. "The mobile communications will be based on the world-leading Nokia TETRA IP solution. TETRA technology has clearly proven itself adaptable not only to transportation and public safety uses, but also to metropolitan administrative needs."
Nokia's TETRA is continuously being enhanced to provide the most advanced solutions and benefits to our customers," adds Mr. Julien.
Nokia is world's leading supplier of TETRA networks and terminals and has demonstrated not only unique capability to deliver multiswitch TETRA networks to operational use, with the ability to provide all TETRA services uniformly countrywide, but also unmatched speed of network roll-out. Special features include: top-class communication security, fast group calls, sophisticated emergency call functionality, prioritized calls, advanced messaging and data communication services, including packet data.
Nokia continues investing in TETRA radio technology and systems for the benefit of present and future customers.
