Nice, France - Following the announcement of a new User Interface (UI) called Series 90, Nokia (NYSE:NOK), the global leader in mobility, today revealed a bold new step in the ongoing march to more advanced mobile applications with the release of its Developer Platform 2.0 for Series 90.
Designed for high-end mobile devices with high-resolution, touch-sensitive color screens - the largest ever available on a Nokia handset - Developer Platform for Series 90 is a complete and feature-rich development platform providing an excellent environment for media consumption, mobile services and a true Internet experience. The first device based on Developer Platform for Series 90, the Nokia 7700 media device, was also announced today in a related press release (www.nokia.com/press).
Developer Platform for Series 90 complements Nokia's other developer platform offerings, Developer Platform for Series 40 and Developer Platform for Series 60. Series 80 UI, which is used in Nokia's Communicator line of high-end, top-performance business devices, will continue as the user interface for Communicator devices going forward, and will be aligned with Developer Platform for Series 90.
By offering development platforms that remain consistent across multiple handsets, Nokia's strategy is to maximize developers' volume opportunities and minimize the need to port applications and services to individual handsets. In support of that goal, Nokia currently expects to ship around 100 million Developer Platform devices in 2004.
"Our on-line community of 1.25 million registered developers, the largest group of mobile developers in the world, now has a roadmap for the next evolution of mobile software," said Lee Epting, vice president of Forum Nokia, the global developer operations group within Nokia. "Developer Platform for Series 90 opens the door to devices with unique sets of capabilities, giving them the power to deliver new and exciting mobile Internet and media experiences."
Two new Software Development Kits (SDKs), Series 90 SDK for Symbian OS and Series 90 MIDP Concept SDK, were also released today. Available free of charge at Forum Nokia's website, www.forum.nokia.com, they provide mobile software developers with everything they need to begin creating mobile applications and services optimized to take advantage of the superior capabilities of Developer Platform for Series 90.
Developer Platform 2.0 for Series 90 includes a comprehensive suite of APIs and technologies for media rich C++ and Java applications and media rich content:
- Java(TM) 2 platform, Micro Edition (J2ME(TM)) with MIDP2.0, CLDC1.0, Wireless Messaging API, Mobile Media API and Java(TM) APIs for Bluetooth
- XHTML browsing over TCP/IP
- MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) with SMIL
- OMA Digital Rights Management (DRM) - forward-lock
- OMA Client Provisioning support
- Symbian OS 7 native APIs - Symbian OS installation file "SIS format" for native applications
Included in Series 90 is an intuitive new touch-screen graphical user interface (UI) based on a 640x320 pixel screen with 65536 colors. The UI features interactive onscreen components, such as handwriting recognition and an Onscreen/Virtual keyboard, enabling the user to control a device with a stylus or hardware keys. Series 90 also features customizable skins, allowing users to easily change the entire graphical look of their device.
