Nokia 12 GSM module to make wireless M2M integration faster and easier
October 22, 2003
New modular design allows M2M connectivity to be easily designed into original equipment devices
LAS VEGAS - Nokia (NYSE: NOK) today introduced the Nokia 12 GSM module for 850MHz and 1900MHz GSM markets, the newest device in Nokia's complete line of Machine to Machine (M2M) products. The Nokia 12 GSM module allows for the remote control and monitoring of machines and other assets over a variety of wireless protocols, including EDGE, GPRS, circuit switched data (CSD) and SMS. These industry-standard protocols allow the Nokia 12 GSM module to easily communicate with both mobile devices and back office systems. Designed for being directly integrated into the design of machines and appliances to enable easy and efficient management of home and business assets, the 1.4 x 1.8 inch, one-half ounce Nokia 12 GSM module is expected to be available during the 3rd quarter of 2004.
As the awareness of the power of wireless M2M continues to grow, more machine and device manufacturers are expressing interest in producing M2M-ready products straight from their assembly lines. By eliminating the interfaces, housings and displays of Nokia's existing M2M devices, the Nokia 30 and Nokia 31 GSM Connectivity Terminals, the Nokia 12 GSM module remains a powerful device, yet becomes a more compact and more cost-effective choice for line-fit applications.
"Our Nokia 30 and Nokia 31 GSM Connectivity Terminals have been extremely successful in connecting existing monitoring systems and for being integrated into custom applications. The Nokia 12 GSM module will allow wireless M2M connectivity to become an increasingly common feature on machines and appliances as they come off the factory floor," said Paul Chellgren, senior vice president of product management and business development for Nokia. "We are witnessing the beginning of a trend in which wireless connectivity becomes an expected, not a novel part of many common products."
Besides introducing a compact, easy to integrate design, the Nokia 12 GSM module also boasts a number of new technological features. Reflecting the rapid deployment of advanced GSM-based networks, the Nokia 12 GSM module supports EDGE technology for faster data throughput speeds. The inclusion of Java(TM) technology allows for faster deployment of applications at a lower cost by enabling the ability to execute applications within the Nokia 12 GSM module itself, reducing the need for additional hardware in the device being monitored. Additionally, the Nokia 12 GSM module allows for the addition of a GPS receiver for location-based applications.
