Nokia powers Telstra’s Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) network in Australia
November 06, 2002

MMS brings ability to send and receive text, images, graphics and sound blended into a single rich message

Nokia is providing Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) network components to deliver Telstra’s MMS service in Australia and enable its mobile subscribers to make the most out of new multimedia messaging possibilities.

The Nokia MMS solution gives mobile subscribers with MMS phones the ability to send and receive text, images, graphics and sound blended into a single rich message. MMS-capable phones can also send multimedia messages via the Internet to any email address or to legacy GSM terminals using an SMS notification. The Nokia MMS solution also allows for easy configuration of the phone, to ensure easier out-of-the-box access.

Nokia has among the wireless industry’s most extensive track record in MMS with around 40 customers to date and an ever-growing number of launched systems, making multimedia messaging a reality for today's mobile consumers.

“Nokia currently provides the GSM, GPRS and MMS network equipment for the Telstra-owned Hong Kong CSL and we are delighted the longstanding relationship with Telstra is extending into the Australian market, allowing us to work together to develop exciting new value-add services that will expand revenue streams for the industry,” said Richard Kilkelly, Regional Director, Telstra Customer Business Team, Nokia Networks Australia.

“Similarly, the cooperation is testament to our continued strong showing in MMS globally and our commitment to the evolution to 3G services,” adds Kilkelly.

“The success of the cooperation with Hong Kong CSL is the basis for engaging Nokia to deliver MMS network equipment here in Australia,” explains Rick Wakeham, Telstra Mobile, Managing Director, Products.

“Telstra sees MMS as the next generation of SMS and believes MMS is set to become a mass-market service that appeals to a variety of consumer and business audiences,” he adds.

Under the agreement Nokia is providing Telstra with its Multimedia Messaging Service Centre (MMSC) and Multimedia Terminal Gateway, completing an MMS solution that ensures the technology is accessible to both MMS and non-MMS enabled users. Nokia will also provide implementation, integration and maintenance services.
