Nokia unveils 3G Service Creation and Execution Platform for advanced voice and data applications
May 25, 2000

Nokia today introduces new service creation capabilities for 3G networks, with the launch of the Nokia 3G Service Creation and Execution Platform. This revolutionary multi-service platform will enable operators to take a leadership position in 3G with the easy provision of a host of different services and applications.

Operators will be able to create the services themselves, develop them in co-operation with Nokia or outsource service development to 3rd party developers. To make the introduction of applications easier the platform provides open Application Programming Interfaces, which allow an operator’s network to communicate with application servers run by service and content providers.

In 3G, the convergence of telecom and datacom environments will stimulate service providers and operators to change the way in which services are created. Today, service creation focuses on network technology, but in 3G applications and content will drive service development.

With Nokia, operators will be able to increase network usage and revenue with multiple services and reduce time-to-market of content when service development can be outsourced to third party companies. However, all this can be done while retaining close control of services and content delivery to mobile subscribers.

"With the Nokia 3G Service Creation and Execution Platform service creation can be centralised into one platform: the same development methods, techniques and skills can be used for creating and managing services for different networks," says Sauli Salo, Senior Vice President, Mobile Switching, Nokia Networks. "As we see services, applications and content driving future growth, instead of technology in the era of 3G, consumers will demand personalisation of services. This new Nokia solution makes it easy to create personalised sets of services."

The Nokia 3G Service Creation and Execution platform is based on Open Service Architecture (OSA) standardised by the 3GPP (3G Partnership Project). It provides seamless interoperability between different network elements and protocols making it possible to bring together 3G, WAP and IP access under a single service. The open interfaces enable flexibility and scalability for fulfilling present and future capacity needs.

OSA brings fast and flexible service creation and the vast content of the Internet to mobile communications networks. Nokia's service platform enables operators to create services by using common Java application development tools which offers the possibility of reducing implementation costs significantly and faster time-to-market.

Nokia is paving the way to the Mobile Information Society with its innovative products and solutions. The company is the leading mobile phone supplier and a leading supplier of mobile, fixed and IP networks, related services as well as multimedia terminals. In 1999, Nokia's net sales totaled EUR 19.8 billion (USD 19.9 billion). Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is listed on the New York (NOK), Helsinki, Stockholm, London, Frankfurt and Paris stock exchanges and employs more than 56 000 people.
