Nokia launches Wireless LAN concept for mobile operators – offering high-speed Internet access for mobile professionals
May 25, 2000

Today, Nokia introduces a completely new concept for mobile operators to expand their portfolio of GSM voice services to high-speed Internet Access for their mobile business subscribers.

The Nokia Mobile Operator Wireless LAN concept will bring the possibility for operators to offer secure high-speed data services, bringing access to corporate networks and the Internet from locations such as the office, airport and hotel, at data rates of up to 11Mbit/s.

The Mobile Operator Wireless LAN solution will offer an attractive and cost-efficient data access network with secure end-to-end communication and the means to authenticate users. It will utilise the existing cellular infrastructure to provide convenient and reliable GSM based SIM authentication and billing, providing global roaming possibilities for mobile Wireless LAN users.

"Nokia will enhance the cellular operators' Wireless Office Solutions offerings to their business customers," says Pekka Soini, Vice President, System Development, Radio Access Systems, Nokia Networks. "This initiative clearly demonstrates our vision of the Mobile Information Society, enabling our existing and new operator customers to offer services that combine mobility with the highest available radio access data rates. Nokia Mobile Operator Wireless LAN is a high speed data solution, complementing Nokia's comprehensive GSM Office and Nokia GSM Intranet Office voice service solutions."

The Nokia Mobile Operator Wireless LAN provides fast Internet and intranet access that can be tailored according to end-user locations. The products are expected to be available during the first half of next year.

Nokia is paving the way to the Mobile Information Society with its innovative products and solutions.
