Nokia announces volume availability of GPRS Core Networks
May 25, 2000

Nokia today announced the immediate availability of commercial GPRS Core network infrastructure which fully supports all ETSI and ANSI specifications and interfaces. Commercial GPRS equipment and software is now available for volume delivery to all existing and new Nokia customers through standard ordering procedures.

Since August 1999 Nokia has delivered almost 40 GPRS Core networks including the Nokia SGSN (Serving GPRS Support Node), Nokia GGSN (Gateway GPRS Support Node) Nokia Charging Gateway to leading operators in Europe, USA, Asia and China. All these operators are now ideally positioned to launch new innovative data services to their customers.

Nokia is at the forefront of development and implementation of GPRS infrastructure for mobile operators, as existing second Generation networks evolve to 3G. With GPRS, high speed packet data can be introduced into mobile networks, ideally positioning customers for the introduction of new, exciting applications and services.

"It has been a tremendous achievement", said Petri Pöyhönen, Head of Nokia's GPRS business program. "Nokia has been able to fully implement this important technology in volumes, faster than any other vendor, supporting our customers every step of the way. This proves that Nokia is a clear leader not only in GSM, but also GPRS – and we are mastering changes that are driven by the mobile Internet."

"Now that we have delivered the technology, we encourage the business to take off with fast and exciting new services," says Ari Lehtoranta Vice President, Systems Integration, Nokia Networks. "The critical issues for rapid deployment are enabling, charging and provisioning of these services in the changed service management environment. In orchestrating the largest networked application community, Nokia is working together with over 500 WAP development partners and is also partnering with leading content companies as well as world-class system integrators."

The mobile internet based today on WAP and GPRS already enables new innovative service creation and 3G will add more features and options for end users. Nokia's key partnerships and developer forums secure current and future content creation

"Nokia has the strongest and most efficient system offering on the market", says Chris Briglin, Head of Marketing, GPRS Business Program, Nokia. "This, coupled with our experience and capability to deliver GPRS networks, will enable Nokia's existing and new GPRS customers to be the first to launch commercial GPRS services giving them a clear market lead in new packet data technologies and revenue generating services."

Nokia is paving the way to the Mobile Information Society with its innovative products and solutions. The company is the leading mobile phone supplier and a leading supplier of mobile, fixed and IP networks, related services as well as multimedia terminals. In 1999, Nokia's net sales totaled EUR 19.8 billion (USD 19.9 billion). Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is listed on the New York (NOK), Helsinki, Stockholm, London, Frankfurt and Paris stock exchanges and employs more than 56 000 people.
