Nokia and Ntegrity Leverage Broadband Technology to Revolutionize Communication Services to Apartment Residents Across America
March 29, 2000
DSL-based Network to Provide New Voice and High-speed Internet Services to Under-served Consumers in 35 Major U.S. Cities
Nokia, a world leader in the supply of Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) products and technologies, and Ntegrity TelecontentTM Services, a leading facilities-based Competitive Local Exchange Carrier (CLEC), today announced a $75 million, three-year agreement for the provision of DSL equipment for a voice and data network serving apartment complexes in 35 U.S. markets.
Under the agreement, Nokia will supply Ntegrity with an ATM-based voice and high-speed Internet access network to deploy DSL technology that delivers voice, data, and video content over the same common copper wires currently used for normal telephone services. This technology enables Ntegrity to cost-effectively offer telephone, computer and Web-based products at affordable prices. The joint effort is expected to increase penetration of Internet-based services, extend access to education and elevate the economic resources available to currently underserved markets
"Ntegrity's community-oriented suite of voice, video and data products satisfies the pent-up demand for integrated communications services in apartment complexes, creating a new revenue stream for apartment owners and property managers," said Dwayne Goldsmith, Ntegrity President and CEO. We're also leveling the playing field for apartment residents in some 14 million households by bringing the benefits of the digital economy and culture to these typically underserved consumers."
"This agreement is an opportunity for Nokia and Ntegrity to bring state-of-the-art packetized voice and Internet service to un-served and under-served communities and capture a dominant position in a 3 trillion dollar marketplace," said Jack Kemp, Ntegrity board member and former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development.
"Nokia is especially pleased to work with Ntegrity to further expand availability of DSL technology and bring affordable voice and always-on high-speed Internet services to those who live, work and learn in America's urban areas, where Internet penetration trails far behind the national average," said Olli Oittinen, Senior Vice President, Broadband Systems, Nokia Networks. "As a global leader in providing powerful broadband interconnectivity, Nokia is committed to delivering end-to-end solutions and services that improve communications, mobility and quality of life around the world."
The network features the Nokia D50 Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM), D50 Remote Access Module and other related products. Nokia will also provide project management and engineering support. The Nokia D50 DSLAM will be used to deploy Voice over DSL (VoDSL) telephone service and a full complement of high-speed Internet access services including ADSL, SDSL, IDSL and G.Lite technologies.
Ntegrity's Nokia-powered DSL network is set for initial launch in 35 markets across 20 states and the District of Columbia. These states include Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin.
