On the move with the Nokia 3rd Generation Demonstration Centre
February 02, 2000

Nokia launches a new Mobile 3G Demonstration Centre, the first in a series of complete traveling experimental systems for testing and demonstration purposes throughout Europe.

The Nokia Mobile 3G Demonstration Centres will be put at the disposal of Nokia's operator customers to undertake full evaluation, testing and demonstration of mobile multimedia applications in a completely live working environment.

"For a mobile operator planning their WCDMA business strategy, the ability to test real 3rd generation system performance and compare it to 2nd generation mobile systems is critical," says Jarmo Leivo, Head of Marketing, WCDMA Radio Access Systems, Nokia Networks. "In addition to operator testing, the Nokia Mobile 3G Demonstration Centres will also be available for selected public exhibitions and demonstrations, allowing application developers, service providers and end-users to get first hand experience of future mobile multimedia services. "

Complementing these mobile facilities, Nokia has experimental WCDMA field systems installed at several facilities around the world, including Beijing, China, Hong Kong SAR, Espoo Finland, and Yokosuka in Japan.

The Nokia WCDMA experimental systems provide sufficient network equipment, software and terminal prototypes to allow thorough testing of coverage, speed, handovers, power control and general functionalities for WCDMA technology. With this system, Nokia customers can combine voice, data and images at speeds up to 384 kbit/s to experience mobile multimedia applications including location-based services, mobile Internet access, multimedia streaming and video telephony.

Nokia provides 3G systems for both WCDMA and worldwide EDGE technologies. These include Base Station Subsystems, Circuit and Packet Switching Systems, Service and Network Management Systems including Service Provisioning and Billing, and 3G Terminals. In addition to infrastructure and software, Nokia Professional Services provides comprehensive service solutions for planning, deploying, managing and enhancing 3G systems.

Nokia is paving the way to the mobile information society with its innovative products and solutions. Nokia is the leading mobile phone supplier and a leading supplier of mobile, fixed and IP networks, related services as well as multimedia terminals. In 1999, net sales totaled EUR 19.8 billion (USD 19.9 billion). Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is listed on the New York (NOK), Helsinki, Stockholm, London, Frankfurt and Paris stock exchanges and employs more than 55 000 people.
