Nokia Inaugural Arts Awards displays winning creative works from students across Asia Pacific
February 10, 2000

At an elegant awards ceremony held in Singapore today, Nokia announced the culmination of the region-wide Nokia Arts Awards - Asia Pacific 1999 and presented awards to the top five winning entries and 15 certifications of merit.

Hailed as one of the most comprehensive region-wide arts competition in Asia Pacific, the inaugural Nokia Arts Awards covered a dozen markets. These include Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.

Based on the theme "Visions of Your Future", Nokia invited students aged between 18 - 25 years to share their creative vision by participating in the event focussed on two-dimensional art. In keeping with Nokia's core brand values, this very well-received effort aimed to celebrate innovation, artistic vision and the creative human spirit amongst youth by offering them a unique opportunity to share their inspired work with some of the best artistic talents in the region.

Highly evident from the submitted paintings were the cultural and ethnic diversity, in the students' vivid imagination and creativity in envisaging a future of technological influence. Some showcased their visual thoughts of the environment in the millennium while others saw the stability of the inner-self and the endurance of the human spirit as a guide through a chaotic and ever changing world.

Based on artistic skill of the work, originality and composition of the paintings, as well as relevance to the theme, the international panel of judges selected the top five winning entries.

Chainarong Klongklin of Thailand captured the judge's hearts and minds with his mixed media work entitled Family and Changes No 2000 and walked away with the top prize, while the second prize was awarded to Taiwan's Huang Sheng-Yeng for an oil on canvas piece entitled States of Mind. The third prize was awarded to Mark A Magistrado of the Philippines for Re-Renaissance, a mixed media artpiece. Lost Life by Indian artist Rakesh Bani won the fourth prize and Vietnam's Luu Chi Hieu's Heritage was awarded the fifth prize.

The distinguished judging panel for the regional finals comprised Fan Di-An, Vice President, Director of Research Department, Central Academy of Fine Arts, China; Huang Tsai-Lang, Deputy Director, Cultural Affairs, Bureau of Taipei; Kwok Kian Chow, Director, National Heritage Board; Frank Nuovo, Chief Designer, Nokia Design Center; Alan Rubenstein, Vice President of LASALLE-SIA College of the Arts and Yrjo Sotama, Professor and President of the University of Art and Design Helsinki (UIAH), Finland.

"The theme "Visions of Your Future" was a call to the students to express, critique, celebrate and respond to their environment and at the same time envision a future, creating a unique link between society, art and contemporary concerns. The resulting works are a rich and varied sampling of some of the best in students' art. Each piece of work speaks of a passionate response from the artist to a dynamic and changing world," said Frank Nuovo.

"Art is mankind's most enduring form of communication. Through nurturing the arts and providing an inspiring forum for the display of talents, the Nokia Arts Awards aims to further promote the growth of the creative arts across the Asia Pacific," said Nigel Litchfield, Senior Vice President, Nokia Mobile Phones, Asia Pacific.

"Art mirrors Nokia's philosophy by transcending national, cultural, racial and age boundaries by connecting all in a shared language of beauty, inspiration and creativity. It is our hope that the award has encouraged young student artists to push their own boundaries, communicate their vision and through art, challenge our perceptions and expectations," added Litchfield.

All 58 art pieces will be exhibited at Sculpture Square, Singapore from February 12 - March 2, 2000 and will subsequently travel to China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, New Zealand and Taiwan.
