Nokia introduces its most rugged GSM phone

The Nokia 6250 is a dust, shock and waterproof WAP compliant phone for professional use
Nokia has today added a new product category of tough products to its comprehensive mobile phone product portfolio. The first phone in this category, the Nokia 6250, has been designed to meet the requirements for a rugged and durable phone for outdoor use under highly demanding conditions. The Nokia 6250 GSM900/1800 dual-band phone is water, shock and dustproof, made primarily for outdoor professionals, hobbyists and corporate users. It can withstand temporary immersion in water, and it is also compliant with the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP). The phone was introduced in conjunction with the CeBIT trade show in Hanover, Germany and at the Nokia - Designed for Life event in Hong Kong. The Nokia 6250 is expected to become available during the third quarter of 2000.

The Nokia 6250 opens up an interesting opportunity for companies to utilize the WAP infrastructure in their field service information management. Service staff for instance can fetch their tasks out in the field by using the WAP terminal, report faults directly to the company database as well as inform the customer directly of the spare parts status at the warehouse. Combined with the Nokia WAP Server 1.0, companies can quickly and cost effectively build their own wireless service network that is ready for the rugged outdoor environment and also utilizes the flexibility and scalability of modern WAP technology. Outdoor enthusiasts will also appreciate the possibility to access weather and news services while skiing, hiking or sailing, for instance.
The design of the Nokia 6250 follows the features of the Nokia classic segment, with special additional features required by professional customers in rugged environments. Shock absorbers among other tough mechanics enable the phone to withstand rough treatment. In addition to normal phone features and the WAP 1.1 compatible browser, the unique rugged features of the Nokia 6250 include automatic volume control, sound level meter (dB representation), stopwatch, more accurate battery monitor and signal strength indicator, user selectable keypad lock time and unlock code, timed profiles, currency conversion from idle mode and display contrast adjustment. The task journal can be used to keep track of working times, expenses and other comments. The information can be summarized and transferred to another compatible mobile phone or other device. The Nokia 6250 provides data connectivity either via infrared or a cable at a data speed of up to 14.4 kbps.
The Nokia 6250 weighs 167 g, and the volume of the product is 159 cc. With its 1000 mAh Li-Ion internal battery, the Nokia 6250 has a talktime of 2.5 - 4.5 hours and a stand-by time of 55 hours (over 2 days) - 260 hours (11 days), depending on, for example, the network conditions and the SIM card.
