Nokia to supply its Integrated IP Access Solution to Thus
December 01, 1999

Nokia today announced it will supply its DX 220 IP Access solution to UK national operator Thus, formerly ScottishTelecom, to support its network expansion.

The equipment will enable Thus to handle the increasing proportion of Internet (IP) traffic arising from its network rollout programme, and provide a migration path to an IP-based network. The Nokia DX 220 IP Access solution is an exciting development as it uniquely offers all the established telephony (PSTN) services together with Internet (IP) services on the same platform. By doing this, it allows a network operator or ISP to offer established revenue-generating telephony services together with Internet access, without the need to install separate dial-up access servers. This enables cost-effective management of the transition of its customer base from telephony to Internet services, providing seamless convergence between the circuit-switching and packet-switching worlds.

The Nokia DX 220 is an established switching platform that already routes over 2 million PSTN calls each day in the UK alone. The development of direct IP access on this flexible platform makes it an ideal compact solution for the new breed of telco-ISP, that wants to offer a portfolio of IP and telephony services to its customers, while retaining a very high quality of service, regardless of service type mix or volume of traffic.

"The proven reliability of the Nokia platform and low cost of ownership, coupled with its IP capabilities, positioned it as a clear winner over other approaches," said John Trower, Operations Director of Thus, " It directly supports our business objectives as a single integrated communications company delivering integrated solutions to our customers."

"Nokia is delighted that Thus has chosen Nokia to deliver its next-generation solutions in, what is, the Internet era, and further strengthen the relationship between the two companies," said Peter Kuhne, Nokia Networks Area Vice President, "Nokia is committed to development of the PSTN and IP convergence as part of its Global IP Mobility strategy and sees the signed agreement with Thus as a significant milestone in this competitive market."

Thus plc, which aims to be one of the UK's leading data and Internet solutions providers, offers integrated communications solutions for a wide range of customers from SMEs to large corporate customers.

Through the Demon Internet brand, Thus is the second largest web host in the UK and fifth largest in the world* and Internet solutions are currently provided for prominent UK organisations including the BBC. Joint venture Scotland OnLine boasts a comprehensive online recruitment service, which is delivered in partnership with DC Thomson and Co.

Thus, which has invested heavily in an advanced fibre optic network in the UK, also delivers a wide range of call centre services, ranging from data collection to complex consultancy. International and UK national partners include Compaq and Microsoft. Thus has sites across the UK and in the Netherlands.
