Nokia receives award from Proximus, Belgium for outstanding professional services
December 14, 1999
Nokia has received an award from Belgacom Mobile for its outstanding professional services in the build-up of a new network expansion.
Early this year Proximus and Nokia signed a three-year frame agreement for the expansion and modernisation of their Proximus GSM network in Belgium. Nokia supplied base stations, base station controllers, Nokia Network Management System and a full range of customer services including installation, network planning, technical support together with Nokia Online Services and training. Components of the Nokia High Capacity Solution were also included.
"As the largest base station supplier to the Proximus network, professional services form a vital part of the relationship between a vendor and operator. With Nokia's experience of network services around the world, we were able to benefit from support for all your key network operational processes", said William Morrow, Executive Vice President, Belgacom Mobile.
The modernisation project brought a number of additional benefits to the network operation including improvement in roaming capture rate, reduction in dropped calls, and extra capacity. The expansion project also enables a smooth migration to GPRS (General Packet Radio Services) and HSCSD (High Speed Circuit
Switched Data).
Nokia received the award as recognition of its early implementation of the solution - which was concluded 3 weeks ahead of schedule. Other award criteria were the flexible manner in which Nokia responded to resolve critical service and site related issues; and the improved quality of the network. Additionally, the completion of
the project was thanks to the co-operation between Proximus and Nokia engineers. Both companies had approximately 100 people employed in the project.
Nokia is the leading mobile phone supplier and a leading supplier of mobile, fixed and IP networks including related services. It also supplies multimedia terminals and computer displays. In 1998, net sales totalled EUR 13.3 billion (USD 15.7 billion). Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is listed on the New York (NOK), Helsinki, Stockholm, London, Frankfurt and Paris stock exchanges and employs more than 53 000 people worldwide.
