Nokia named to U.S. "100 Best Companies to Work For" list
December 23, 1999

Nokia has been named to Fortune magazine's "100 Best Companies to Work For in America" list for 1999, the culmination of an employee-focused assessment of work-life issues and human resources programs and policies in companies throughout the United States.

Winners were selected through a comprehensive evaluation conducted by the San Francisco-based Great Places to Work Institute. Two-thirds of the scoring for each company was based on direct employee input gathered via random sample surveys. The balance of each company's score came from the Institute's assessment of its human resources programs and practices.

K-P Wilska, president of Nokia Inc., said recognition on the Fortune list is the result of a team effort by Nokia employees to nurture a positive work environment based on the company's core values of customer satisfaction, achievement, respect for the individual and continuous learning. "We've built our business on these values because we truly believe in them," Wilska said. "That has made all the difference for our customers and for our employees, and it makes Nokia a special place to work. We are very pleased to receive this recognition."

Eliane Hall, vice president of Human resources for Nokia Inc., said the mix of 58 publicly held and 42 privately held companies illustrates the competitive workplace environment in the United States today. "All employers are judged today by a different set of standards than was the case even a few years ago," Hall said. "Pay and benefits are just the starting point - people today want a work environment that supports personal growth and the opportunity to make meaningful contributions. Nokia's ability to provide that type of environment will help us continue to be an employer of choice in a highly competitive industry."

Nokia employs more than 7,500 in manufacturing, sales, research and development and support functions in Texas, California, Massachusetts and Florida. The company's headquarters for the Americas are in Irving, Tex.

Nokia is paving the way to the mobile information society with its innovative products and solutions. Nokia is the leading mobile phone supplier and a leading supplier of mobile, fixed and IP networks including related services. It also supplies multimedia terminals and computer displays. In 1998, net sales totaled EUR 13.3 billion (USD 15.7 billion). Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is listed on the New York (NOK), Helsinki, Stockholm, London, Frankfurt and Paris stock exchanges and employs more than 53,000 people.
