Nokia and ONE in Austria sign new agreement for the expansion of GSM infrastructure
December 28, 1999

Nokia and the Austrian GSM operator ONE have signed a contract for the expansion and implementation of GSM equipment for ONE's GSM 1800 network. Under the agreement, valued at approximately EUR 145 million, Nokia will deliver a full range of infrastructure.

"When we built up the first phase of our GSM1800-network, Nokia was an innovative and reliable partner for us. With its local team of network experts, Nokia has successfully established the network. With the enlargement of our network we aim to provide our customers with a first-class service", says Jürgen Peetz, Chief Technical Officer ONE.

Within the first implementation wave Nokia has already delivered GSM technology valued at approximately EUR 230 million. With this deal, Nokia will supply Nokia mobile switching centres, home location registers, base station controllers and base stations.

"Austria is one of the fastest growing telecom markets in Europe and is moving firmly towards the Mobile Information Society. We have all reason to be proud that ONE has chosen to continue working with Nokia to build out their rapidly expanding network," says Urs Pennanen, Managing Director, Nokia Austria GmbH.

Since the end of October 1999, ONE, which has 950 employees can reach 95% of the Austrian population and has roaming contracts with 145 networks in 78 countries. By the end of October, ONE had 350,000 customers using the GSM-1800 services nationwide.

Nokia is the leading mobile phone supplier and a leading supplier of mobile, fixed and IP networks including related services. It also supplies multimedia terminals and computer displays. In 1998, net sales totalled EUR 13.3 billion (USD 15.7 billion). Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is listed on the New York (NOK), Helsinki, Stockholm, London, Frankfurt and Paris stock exchanges and employs more than 53 000 people worldwide.
