Shanghai Unicom and Nokia sign GPRS MOU in China
November 09, 1999

Nokia and the Shanghai branch of China United Telecommunications Corporation, (China Unicom) have signed a Memorandom of Understanding for the supply of an GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) trial network in Shanghai, China.

Shanghai Unicom will deploy a GPRS system comprising of the Nokia SGSN, (Serving GPRS Support Node) Nokia GGSN (Gateway GPRS Support Node), Charging Gateway and IP backbone components necessary for GPRS deployment.

With this agreement Shanghai Unicom will take the first step to provide true mobile Internet access to their subscribers - offering packet switched data through the enhanced GSM network. Shanghai Unicom was established in July 1994 and currently has more than 250,000 subscribers in their GSM network. Nokia has been one of the main suppliers to the Shanghai Unicom GSM 900 network since 1995.

"Nokia is pleased to continue our long-running partnership with Shanghai branch of China Unicom. Nokia's carrier class scaleable GPRS solution is ideal for their pre-commercial and commercial deployment needs," says Malcolm Arnold, Vice President, System Business, Nokia China. Nokia's GPRS solution offers the benefit of instant IP connectivity and more than a ten-fold increase in existing data speeds. GPRS will offer true global mass market wireless access to the Internet and other packet-based networks, as well as providing an essential stepping stone to 3rd Generation networks.

Nokia is paving the way to the mobile information society with its innovative products and solutions. Nokia is the leading mobile phone supplier and a leading supplier of mobile, fixed and IP networks including related services. It also supplies multimedia terminals and computer displays.
