Nokia to supply DSL products and services to Conversent Communications for deployment in the New England States
November 15, 1999

Nokia to supply DSLAMs for US Central Office co-location deployment

Nokia, a world leader in the supply of digital subscriber line (DSL) products and technology, has signed a multi-million dollar agreement with Conversent Communications, a switched and facilities-based integrated communications provider, to deploy Nokia DSL equipment in hundreds of US COs over the next three years.

Nokia will supply Conversent with a complete package of DSL products and services to serve small and medium sized businesses throughout markets in the New England States, later aiming for nationwide expansion.

The contract includes the versatile ATM-based Nokia D50 Speedlink DSL Access Multiplexer (DSLAM) that offers a portfolio of DSL technologies, such as ADSL (DMT), SDSL, IDSL and G.Lite. Nokia D50 is a two-stage DSLAM consisting of a Master Control Shelf (MCS) and Line Card Shelves (LCS). Nokia will supply different kinds of LCS' for remote installation as well as a broad range of training and support services.

"Nokia is dedicated to providing its customers with true carrier-class network solutions that enable them to deliver cost-effective voice and data services to a wide range of end-users for real world applications," says Pekka Mielonen, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Nokia High Speed Access Products. "With the scalability, field-proven reliability and enhanced capabilities of the Nokia D50 Speedlink platform, Conversent can readily meet today's high demand for fast Internet access and is well-positioned for tomorrow's mass deployment of integrated broadband services."

"Nokia's flexible architecture offers us numerous network design options. The Nokia D50 Remote Line Card Shelf capability allows us to economically provision SDSL, ADSL, and IDSL services in our less densely populated cities, using T1, T3 or OC3 as our transport," says Dave Graham, Conversent Senior Vice President of Network Implementation. "The Nokia D50 Remote Access Module allows us to instantly provision these services in multi-tenant units (MTUs) using the same line and uplink cards which in turn, reduces our overhead costs."

With Nokia's package of remote solutions, Conversent can now cost-effectively deliver DSL services to customers served from remote central offices, off digital loop carriers or residing in remote locations such as Multiple Dwelling Units (MDUs) without expensive network overlays for new service introduction. The Nokia D50 remote solutions easily integrate into embedded access networks, extending the reach of the DSL services throughout the loop access network.
