Centertel of Poland implements Nokia's IP Security Solutions to protect mission critical applications
November 30, 1999

Nokia and PTK Centertel, the network operator in Poland, have agreed on the supply of IP Security Solution, which enables Centertel to protect Internet connections through intelligent firewall capabilities.

The contract covers the Nokia IP440 Firewall Router, optimized for secure Internet applications requiring performance and high availability. Centertel will implement the solution to secure part of their internal IP network designated for the Nokia Network Management System NMS. The installation is completed by the end of November.

According to Bertrand Le Guern, Technical Director, PTK Centertel: "Adding security component to network management ensures that our mission-critical applications will work properly maintaining the high level of service quality for our subscribers."

"The IP440 from Nokia is ideally suited to provide secure Internet connectivity, by combining efficient IP routing and bandwidth management with a complete implementation of the best in-class firewall software. It is a perfect complement to the Nokia NMS and offers full security to the part of Centertel's IP network designated for management system", said Rainer M. Richter, General Manager for Central and Eastern Europe, Nokia Internet Communications.

Nokia IP Security Solutions is a bearer technology for Nokia's IP Mobility strategy. Benefits include: a complete firewall solution; true plug and play implementation; standard hardware components; space-saving design; remote network management; and "hot swappable" components for uninterrupted service. All Nokia IP Security products come with standard Check Point FireWall-1/VPN-1, and Data Fellows F-Secure SSH (SecureShell) software for secure management.

Centertel is an NMT 450 and GSM 1800 network operator. Their Idea GSM network, launched in March 1998, has more than 550,000 subscribers and a population coverage of nearly 40 per cent. Idea has signed roaming agreements with 128 operators in 71 countries. In 1999, Centertel was the first operator in Poland to introduce services based on the Nokia IN platform. Idea subscribers have a wide range of services at their disposal, including free of charge voice mail.
