Nokia Foundation Award in 1999 to developer of education in mathematics

The Nokia Foundation, formed to support the development of scientific competence and educational capabilities in information and telecommunications technologies throughout Finland, has granted its 1999 award, worth FIM 50 000, to Kullervo Nieminen, M.Sc., for his multifunctional and successful work in the development of math education.
The foundation also granted 45 Nokia Scholarships to post-graduate students. In addition, four teams supporting interaction between universities and the industry were granted Nokia Team awards. In all, the grants amount to a total of FIM 1 343 000.
Today, at the annual Nokia Foundation Grant Holder Announcement event, the award was presented to Kullervo Nieminen by Maija Rask, Finland's Minister of Education. Minister Rask stated that Kullervo Nieminen´s decades of work in the development of education and knowledge in mathematics and the sciences have been exemplary and valuable in terms of results and voluntary efforts. According to Minister Rask, Nieminen´s enthusiasm and commitment to his work has had a major influence on students and teachers.
Kullervo Nieminen, 58, has worked as a full-time teacher in mathematics and as a developer of education in many educational establishments, from elementary schools to universities. He has actively taken part in diverse projects, such as the LUMA project for the postgraduate studies of mathematics teachers.
Kullervo Nieminen started special math training at the Päivölä folk high school already in the mid-90´s. It was based on intensive courses and camps held on weekends and during school holidays. He arranged teachers and special training for students interested in mathematics. In 1997, he planned and started the current 2-year course in mathematics, during which the students pass the high school examination and perform work training.
In previous years, this Nokia Foundation Award was presented to Lauri Kuokkanen (1995), Pekka Tarjanne (1996), Linus Torvalds (1997) and Arto Salomaa (1998).
