Helsinki Telephone Corporation chooses Nokia's leading-edge IP technology for Fast Internet Access
October 11, 1999
The Helsinki Telephone Corporation (HTC) has launched broadband data services using ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) network technology, supplied by Nokia.
With the Nokia solution, Helsinki Telephone will be able to offer services ranging from fast Internet access, multimedia services and advanced tailored services for residential users, as well as advanced remote networking services for business customers. This can be achieved without the need for major network modifications.
The Nokia Broadband IP Access solution combines ADSL (Asynchronous Digital Subsciber Line) technology, ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode ) multiplexing and innovative IP Access technology optimised for broadband access.
Earlier this year, Nokia and the Helsinki Telephone Corporation signed an agreement for the delivery of equipment to provide complete Broadband IP Access network solutions. The technology makes it possible for high speed digital data services to be carried simultaneously with voice traffic over the fixed line copper network.
Jukka Alho, Deputy Managing Director and COO, Helsinki Telephone Corporation said HTC will continue introducing new services to satisfy the increasing demand for local broadband connectivity and third generation fixed broadband applications. "We have been developing ADSL applications together with Nokia since 1997 in broadband networks and this new agreement will make ADSL available for companies and residential users in Helsinki area. We see this as a major step forward for our customers."
"The high scaleability and cost-efficiency of the Nokia Broadband IP Access solution will enable Helsinki Telephone to offer the most cost-competitive high-speed Internet access service on the Finnish market," says Vesa Tykkyläinen, Vice President, Sales & Marketing, Broadband Systems, Nokia Telecommunications. "Nokia's Broadband IP access solution offers all the network elements to provide true end-to-end IP connectivity, including advanced network management and customer care and billing systems."
The HTC service is currently available in the innerHelsinki area and will be expanded to cover the greater metropolitan region next year. The initial frame agreement covers deliveries in 1999 and 2000, with an option to extend to 2001. The contract covers delivery of all fundamental parts of the Broadband IP Access system, including ADSL modems (Nokia M), Nokia DSLAMs, Nokia R700 remote access nodes, Nokia NMS, Provideo workflow management system, and related customer services.
Nokia Broadband IP Access solution provides a complete set of tools for operators to bring broadband services quickly and at a reasonable cost to enterprises and residential users alike. With the Nokia Broadband IP Access solution, individual end-users can enjoy fast access to the Internet, while business customers can experience remote access to the office and secure home working.
