Nokia TariffZone helps operators stay in their revenue zone
October 12, 1999
Nokia has launched Nokia TariffZone to help GSM network operators customize their service and pricing offering in selected geographical areas.
As part of the Nokia Total Mobility Home concept, Nokia TariffZone gives operators the means to drive the migration from fixed to mobile networks, to reach untapped revenue potential.
Nokia TariffZone allows operators to establish in their networks well-defined zones in which attractive call-rates apply. By choosing the right localised service areas (LSAs), operators can create "tariff zones" for large corporate sites ("office zones") or even individual subscribers ("home zones"). When mobile users call from a tariff zone, they can enjoy special call rates.
As a ready-to-go, Intelligent Network supporting, system-wide solution, Nokia TariffZone provides the basic functioning of location-dependent tariffing, but also allows for the provisioning of services and the maintenance of zone-location information.
Because zones in growing networks may require constant refinement, Nokia TariffZone includes the Nokia Service Positioning System (SPS) product. Nokia SPS allows operators to create and fine-tune service area definitions with the help of automated procedures and a geographical information system (GIS) environment. Operators can use Nokia SPS to easily optimise the size and shape of zones to serve a particular location, especially important when the network configuration changes.
A special feature of SPS called the "LSA name server" simplifies service provisioning by automatically assigning the right zone, based on the subscriber's street address. The LSA name server matches the address to the zone that best covers the desired location.
In addition, Nokia TariffZone can use the Nokia unique "cell list comparison" (CLC) feature to maintain tariff reliability in certain situations. For example, a customer in the home zone may sometimes -- depending on the dynamics of the radio network -- be served by a network cell that does not belong to the zone. This means that the customer will be incorrectly charged at standard call-rates. CLC protects the customer by helping to ensure that in these cases, the customer is still billed at zone tariffs.
Nokia is paving the way to the mobile information society with its innovative products and solutions. Nokia is the leading mobile phone supplier and a leading supplier of mobile, fixed and IP networks including related services. It also supplies multimedia terminals and computer displays. In 1998, net sales totaled EUR 13.3 billion (USD 15.7 billion). Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is listed on the New York (NOK), Helsinki, Stockholm, London, Frankfurt and Paris stock exchanges and employs more than 51 000 people.
