October 22, 1999

Nokia has begun the construction of a research and development center in Bochum.

The new premises will be used in research and development activities as well as for testing purposes by Nokia Smart Traffic Products, a business area of Nokia. The construction work is estimated to be complete by the end of 2000.

"This expansion establishes Bochum as the main hub of our R&D activities in Germany", says Kalevi Kaartinen, Vice President, Nokia Smart Traffic Products and Managing Director of Nokia GmbH. "In addition to Nokia Smart Traffic Products, the Nokia Research Center, Nokia Mobile Phones and Nokia Multimedia Terminals business areas also have their R&D units here, a concentration of expertise in Bochum", Kaartinen continues. With this expansion, the various R&D units will be joined under one roof. Nokia Smart Traffic Products has had one other research and development center in Ulm for over a year.

Since 1988 Nokia Smart Traffic Products has been developing mobile communications and information solutions for the automobile industry on the basis of GSM, GPS and Internet technologies.
