Nokia wins contract to supply Internet-by-call solution in Germany
October 28, 1999

Nokia has signed an agreement with Drillisch AG, based in Bad Munstereife, Germany, to supply equipment for its new Internet-by-call access service. The contract covers the supply of Nokia's IP Security Solutions, AAA server, network management and a full range of customer services.

Nokia will supply Drillisch with all the network elements required for full Internet-by-call access; from Internet-Protocol-based firewall/routers to an AAA (Authentication, Authorizing and Accounting) server. All the network elements will be managed by the Nokia Network Management System. This gives the network operator complete control over each procedure in the network. The IETF's SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) network management standard for element management.

Drillisch launched its Internet-by-call service - an important step towards an integrated data and voice network - in order to open-up the network beyond voice telephony for Internet users. The Internet-by-call network will enable users to dial straight into the Drillisch Internet network over a PSTN without the normally prolonged log-on procedures. Thus, Internet access will become quicker and easier. The Internet-by-call service will be launched in the middle of november 1999.

Drillisch AG's new Internet-by-call service is the first step towards making the company a leading Internet Service Provider (ISP).

This is the second contract with Drillisch that Nokia has won this year. In February Nokia signed a contract to supply a full-scale fixed network infrastructure, including switching equipment.

"Our work with Nokia has shown just what sort of synergies can develop when the know-how of a network operator is combined with the skills of an experienced infrastructure provider", said Marc Brucherseifer, member of the executive board, Drillisch AG. "Nokia has already set high standards as an end-to-end supplier in this important area of IP Security, in mobile and fixed networks."

"Nokia is delighted to be working with Drillisch AG once again," said Mr Jörns Haberstroh, Managing Director, Nokia Telecommunications GmbH. "This contract underlines Nokia's strength as an end-to-end supplier of Secure IP Networking. Nokia offers a comprehensive line of products for Internet security applications by combining world-class routing capabilities with the best in-class firewall software. Nokia's integrated router/firewall product family eliminates the need for separate Intranet and Internet access routers in firewall applications. The supply of our Internet-by-call solution is a further development in Nokia's existing IP business."

Drillisch AG offers mobile communication services and phones, fixed communication services and intelligent technologies and systems. The company (including the Alphatel Group) has 180 employees and achieved a total turnover of DM230 million in 1998. Drillisch tripled its subscriber base from 40,000 at the end of 1997 to 132,000 at the end of 1998. In the fixed network sector, Drillisch aims to build up its own fixed network capacities - with 2 million minutes per day at the beginning of the second quarter 1999. By the end of 1999 Drillisch plans to increase this capacity to 15 million minutes per day. Drillisch AG has been trading shares on the Frankfurt stock exchange in the "Neuer Markt" since April 1998.

Nokia is paving the way to the mobile information society with its innovative products and solutions. Nokia is the leading mobile phone supplier and a leading supplier of mobile, fixed and IP networks including related services. It also supplies multimedia terminals and computer displays. In 1998, net sales totaled EUR13.3 billion (USD 15.7 billion). Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is listed on the New York (NOK), Helsinki, Stockholm, London, Frankfurt and Paris stock exchanges and employs more than 53,000 worldwide.
