Nokia Mobile Phones Inaugurates Philippines Office
September 13, 1999
Nokia Mobile Phones, a world leading manufacturer of cellular mobile phones, opened its Philippine Office on September 13, 1995.
Located in central business area of Manila, the Nokia Mobile Phones Philippine Office will serve as the nerve centre in all the business activities of Nokia's mobile phones division in the country.
"Nokia has reflected the fast global growth of telecommunications technology in the past few years," said Department of Transportation and Communications (DOCT) Secretary Jesus B. Garcia, Jr.
"By coming up with unique, state-of-the-art cellular units that meet the disparate demands of the public from the harried homemaker to the chairman of the board, Nokia has carved its own niche in the rapidly expanding cellular market", Secretary Garcia continues.
Mr. Jouko Häyrynen, Senior Vice President, Sales for Asia-Pacific said in his opening speech: "The new office reflects our commitment to and the great importance of the Philippine cellular market which is one the fastest growing markets in the Asia-Pacific region. With our new office and good co-operation of our partners we are able to develop a strong Nokia brand presence, make the Nokia phones even more successful than today and serve our end-customer in the best possible way." The Philippines office inauguration was also hosted by Mr. Martin Fernandez, Country Manager, Philippines.
The Nokia officials paid as courtesy call on DOCT Under-secretary Josefina T. Lichauco to exchange views on the state of telecommunications in the country and to discuss Nokia's plans for growth in the Philippines and in the Asia-Pacific region. They also received the ceremonial keys to the City of Manila during a visit with Manila's Mayor Alfredo Lim.
Even before the establishment of its Manila office, Nokia Mobile Phones have already been familiar brand among Filipinos. Since 1993 after the local telecommunications industry was deregulated by the government, both Nokia's digital and analogue cellular phones had been available to cellular mobile users by newly franchised CMTS operators like Islacom, Globe Telecom and Smart. With the Manila office now in place, cellular phone operators, dealers and users can expect faster access to the latest product and service offerings of Nokia Mobile Phones. This will also strengthen the company's thrust to be a major player in the cellular market mobile telephone industry which is expected to grow by over 200 % from a subscriber base of 207,00 users at the end of 1994 to 420,000 by the end of 1995.
Nokia Mobile Phones' revenue in 1994 was over USD 2 billion and it is the second largest manufacturer of mobile phones in the world. Employing over 9, 000 people, it operates five factories and seven research and development centres world-wide and has joint ventures and affiliates in more than 20 countries world-wide. Its regional headquarters for Asia-Pacific and the Gulf is located in Hongkong with sales activities throughout the region. Annual sales in APACG region accounted for 16 per cent of Nokia Mobile Phones revenue in 1994.
