Nokia demonstrates off-the-shelf software solutions for operators
September 10, 1999

Nokia Multimedia Terminals will be demonstrating a variety of navigational software solutions for different digital platforms making it easier for users to navigate the increasing amount of channels and other services, such as Internet access and e-mail

Nokia NaviTMbars is a complete system for building customer relations while providing the end-user with a navigator for his set-top box. Through a content editor, the operator builds and maintains the direct relation with the viewer as well as providing the viewer with an easy way to navigate the full range of programmes and services available. Nokia NaviTMbars consists of a vertical bar displaying the range of categories on offer, and a horizontal bar showing individual services available in each category. The user selects categories using the remote control buttons. This software is part of a project Nokia is currently developing in Germany with ZDF and Deutsche Telekom, named MediaScreen.

Nokia TV Guide is a software solution developed with the vast range of choices in the digital TV environment in mind. It gives viewers the ability to search and manage information, and gives the operator an opportunity to offer advertising space and tailor messages to conform with their corporate identity. Nokia TV Guide is SI-compatible, allowing the operator to update schedules automatically.

Nokia Interactive Service Creator is aimed at producers and content providers wanting to create new interactive services and enhance existing programmes with interactive elements. The solution can be divided into two systems:
  • the Service Composer is used to create new interactive services and add content, either by the producer or another source.
  • the Service Distributor transmits services on one or more platforms simultaneously and can manage supervision, updating and distribution of these services. These elements are available separately or as a package, and the system is currently being trialed with SVT (Swedish broadcaster)

Nokia is paving the way to the mobile information society with its innovative products and solutions. Nokia is the leading mobile phone supplier and a leading supplier of mobile,
fixed and IP networks including related services. It also supplies multimedia terminals and computer displays. In 1998, net sales totaled EUR 13.3 billion (USD 15.7 billion).
