Nokia expands Prepaid Analog Mobile Phone Family
September 22, 1999

Nokia offers first Prepaid phones available in both network and phone-based formats to provide consumers financial flexibility

Nokia, the world's largest mobile phone manufacturer, today unveiled at PCS'99 new additions to the Nokia Prepaid Analog Mobile Phone Family - fashionable phones designed to provide consumers the flexibility of owning a mobile phone without the service contract requirements. Joining the highly popular Nokia 918 Prepaid cellular phone, consumers now have two new prepaid phone choices with the Nokia 252 and 282. All phones in the Nokia prepaid family support phone-based prepaid calling services supported by Topp Telecom Inc., while the new Nokia 252 and 282 also support network-based calling features. To be sold nationally at Best Buy, Circuit City, 7-ll and Wal-Mart, the Nokia 252p will be available in November and the Nokia 282p begins availability in January 2000.

Prepaid calling options are available for consumers in two formats, network-based and phone-based. Phone-based formats help monitor the consumers debited air-time through software within the handset. Nokia's prepaid family of phones can all be easily activated through Topp Telecom Inc., a domestic prepaid wireless service company, by calling a toll-free number. Additional minutes can also be purchased and credited to the phone through the toll-free number.

Nokia is the first mobile phone manufacturer to introduce network-based prepaid options for analog phones. A special prepaid menu makes it quick and easy to manage airtime, with one-touch access to the network to add airtime or to check the prepaid balance. These features were developed with Boston Communications Group, a leading provider of network prepaid software services to major wireless carriers in the Americas.

"Nokia's analog cellular phones continue to set industry standards for performance, easy-to-use features and stylish design," said Juha Pinomaa, vice president, AMPS product line management at Nokia. "With the introduction of the enhanced Nokia 252 and Nokia 282 as the first prepaid analog phones to offer both network and phone-based formats, Nokia has again proven its commitment to providing the preferred solution for both carriers and mobile phone users."

Both sleek and powerful, the Nokia 252 is available in ten fashionable colors including a wide range of high-gloss and brushed metallic finishes and provides users up to three hours talk time or more than two hours of standby time with a standard battery. The Nokia 252 also offers caller ID, a voice mail waiting indicator, short messaging and a phone directory that stores up to 75 frequently used names and numbers. Additional features include a large LCD screen, call timers and eight one-touch dialing locations.

Weighing just 4.5 ounces, the folded design of the Nokia 282 makes it easy for users to carry this feature-packed phone which is currently available in fashionable Brushed Pewter, Ruby Red, Velvet Indigo and Satin Silver colors. The Nokia 282 offers up to 100 minutes of talk time and 24 hours of standby time, a vibrating alert, a profiles key for setting ring and volume options and 12 ringing tunes plus an option enabling users to set special tunes for VIP callers. Other features include a phone directory that stores up to 75 names and numbers, caller ID and a call log for easy viewing of the last 15 dialed, 15 received and 15 missed calls.
