Nokia launches Always on Net with Nokia DX220 IP Access
September 23, 1999
Nokia today launches the Nokia DX 220 IP Access solution with the Nokia Always on Net service. With this service Nokia will set a new standard for Internet access, offering operators and Internet Service Providers a constant connection to Internet - opening the window to next generation web-based businesses and services. DX 220 IP Access integrates the PSTN and IP worlds to offer a high capacity solution for dial-up traffic.
Always on Net allows users to easily access the latest Internet applications and services. For operators and ISPs, Always on Net enables service differentiation, service improvement and increased revenues. The Nokia DX 220 IP Access solution with the Nokia Always on Net service will be introduced at Telecom 99, Geneva, Switzerland, during 10-17 October.
Nokia Always on Net is based on a constant D-channel connection over an existing ISDN line. At present, an ISDN line consists of two B-channels connected between the end-user and an operator's or ISP's network. Now the end-user will have three connections: one channel offering e.g. 9.6 kbit/s and two channels offering 64 kbit/s each. As with normal ISDN, the B-channels continue to be charged based on usage. However, the constant D-channel connection does not necessarily cost more than a monthly fee.
For the operator and ISP, creating new revenue opportunities is paramount. Always on Net with Nokia DX 220 IP Access now offers that possibility. Not only is existing ISDN enhanced, but easy access to new services opens up potential new revenue sources. End-users benefit from new innovative services such as constant e-mail delivery. Nokia Always on Net enables next generation interactive web services to be accessed easily and quickly.
Nokia is paving the way to the mobile information society with its innovative products and solutions. Nokia is the leading mobile phone supplier and a leading supplier of mobile, fixed and IP networks including related services. It also supplies multimedia terminals and computer displays. In 1998, net sales totaled EUR 13.3 billion (USD 15.7 billion). Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is listed on the New York (NOK), Helsinki, Stockholm, London, Frankfurt and Paris stock exchanges and employs more than 51 000 people.
