Nokia increases scalability, resiliency, and functionality of IP Telephony portfolio
September 28, 1999
Nokia targets service providers looking beyond toll bypass to higher value sustainable markets such as IPCentrex
Nokia today announced numerous enhancements to its IP Telephony portfolio in the areas of scalability, resiliency and functionality. Service providers will now be able to offer multiple voice and FAX services including alternate long distance, virtual voice private networks, and IP Centrex all from a single platform.
Nokia's new distributed call processing server functionality will enable service providers to scale IP telephony implementations to meet both geographic and high user concentration requirements. Leveraging Nokia's unique distributed architecture, IP Telephony implementations will now scale to serve up to 120,000 client/gateway port connections. This same functionality will allow service providers to strategically place call processing components in geographical locations maximizing the resiliency of their networks.
The Nokia call processing server and back office elements will now be available on Sun Microsystems' family of telco ready, NEBS certified servers. The Sun(TM) Netra (TM) servers are powered by the Ultrasparc(TM) processor running the robust Solaris(TM) Operating Environment. The Netra servers are already widely adopted by service providers and have now been selected by Nokia as the platform of choice.
Nokia has further enhanced its call processing feature functionality to include several new centrex-like telephony features, including multi step call forwarding, conference calling, and browser configurable individual and user group features. The Nokia IPClient central administration server allows service providers to provision and manage devices and feature functionality including the administration of client device IP configurations.
"We are seeing many service providers looking beyond toll bypass to higher value sustainable markets," said Dan MacDonald, VP Marketing, Nokia Internet Communications "Nokia continues to enable these providers the ability to rapidly deploy services, with a specific focus on client oriented applications such as IPCentrex. These enhancements, together with our industry leading call processing and client portfolio further strengthens our market position.
This new functionality, all included in the Nokia's IP Telephony 4.0 release, will be commercially available in the 4th quarter of 1999.
