Nokia expanding mobile phone production in Texas
August 26, 1999

- Ft. Worth base station factory being converted to mobile phone production -

Nokia is converting its Ft. Worth-area Diplomacy Road manufacturing facility to mobile phone production, as consumer demand for the world's most sought-after mobile phones continues to grow rapidly.

"We continue to experience fast growth," K-P Wilska, president, Nokia Mobile Phones - Americas, said. "We have been increasing manufacturing capacity continuously at our Alliance Corridor factory - which already is the world's largest mobile phone factory - but due to the tremendous popularity of our products, we must do even more. As a result of this change, Nokia's employment in the Dallas-Ft. Worth Metroplex will increase, which demonstrates our continuing commitment to our employees and the community."

The Diplomacy Road facility presently makes base stations for mobile phone networks. Base station manufacturing will shift to other Nokia factories in Oulu, Finland, and Camberley, the United Kingdom by the end of June 2000. Research and development activities and prototype manufacturing for Nokia's infrastructure business will remain in the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex.

Nokia has occupied the Diplomacy factory since 1991, when the company first began manufacturing operations in the United States. The Alliance factory opened in 1995 to accommodate increased demand for mobile phones. Since 1995, the Diplomacy Road factory has been used for production of GSM- base stations.

Nokia's regional headquarters for the Americas is located in Irving, Tex. The 'Nokia Campus', as it is commonly called, consists of administrative, sales and marketing and R&D employees. Beginning with a handful of employees in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex in 1992, Nokia now employs more than 4,500 in the area, including more than 2,300 in mobile phone manufacturing.

Nokia is paving the way to the mobile information society with its innovative products and solutions. Nokia is the leading mobile phone supplier and a leading supplier of mobile, fixed and IP networks including related services. It also supplies multimedia terminals and computer displays. In 1998, net sales totaled EUR 13.3 billion (USD 15.7 billion). Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is listed on the New York (NOK), Helsinki, Stockholm, London, Frankfurt and Paris stock exchanges and employs more than 51 000 people.
