Nokia introduces a combination of TV, Internet and mobile phone technology
August 27, 1999
Nokia today introduced MediaScreen, an entirely new concept prototype, combining television, Internet and mobile phone technology. The announcement was made at Nokia's press conference at the Internationale Funkausstellung (IFA) in Berlin, Germany.
Nokia Multimedia Terminals is a pioneer in digital terminals for TV viewing. MediaScreen creates opportunities for mobile use of terrestrial (DVB-T) digital television - a key topic at IFA 99. This device enables interactive access to the Internet and the selection of web pages offered by the broadcasting company within its digital signal stream, even for people on the move. Moreover, MediaScreen makes it possible to send and receive e-mails, watch television and listen to the radio with digital quality.
"This prototype is a concrete example of Nokia's aim to make the Internet available to anyone, anywhere", Dr Helmut Stein, Senior Vice President, Nokia Multimedia Terminals said. "Nokia Multimedia Terminals' products complement the use of telecommunications channels with broadband digital TV channels for transfer of data in the home or office."
MediaScreen was developed within the framework of the DVB@air, a joint project between Nokia, the German broadcaster ZDF and Deutsche Telekom. ZDF created the multimedia data service digitext which translates information into the Internet language HTML. Apart from an electronic program guide and TV channels, digitext forms an element of ZDF.mobil. The broadcasting of signals uses the terrestrial networks made available by Deutsche Telekom's DVB-T pilot project in Berlin. The D1 network will supply the GSM channel.
At IFA, MediaScreen has also been integrated in a car, in extended cooperation with Volkswagen AG. The aim is to demonstrate that the above applications are also possible in mobile operation.
Nokia is paving the way to the mobile information society with its innovative products and solutions. Nokia is the leading mobile phone supplier and a leading supplier of mobile, fixed and IP networks including related services. It also supplies multimedia terminals and computer displays. In 1998, net sales totaled EUR 13.3 billion (USD 15.7 billion). Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is listed on the New York (NOK), Helsinki, Stockholm, London, Frankfurt and Paris stock exchanges and employs more than 51 000 people.
