Omnitel partner with Nokia for enhanced capacity and service levels of the second largest GSM network in Europe
August 30, 1999

Omnitel, Italy, the second largest GSM network operator in Europe, has made an EUR 170 million agreement with Nokia for the capacity migration and service level upgrade of their network.

The agreement incorporates the new high capacity Nokia MSCi mobile switching centres, Value Added service platforms and the Nokia NMS 5000 network management systems. Nokia MSCi can serve 400,000 subscribers with one switch, controlled by an Intelligent Network. For Omnitel this gives a unique opportunity to offer new subscriber profiles and location based person-to-person communication services. It also enables efficient management of person-to-information communication, which is becoming increasingly important when offering Rich Voice Calls containing both voice and data, such as images, and Internet connectivity.

Omnitel have already successfully integrated the state-of-the-art Nokia NMS 5000 Network Management System into their network, bringing complete network management capabilities for more than eight million subscribers.

"Nokia has proven to be successful in producing high capacity and low operational cost system solutions. Our selection will definitely give us a strong position for the future, as the volume of voice, data and IP based traffic increases," says Mr. Clint Cooper, Chief Technical Officer, Omnitel.

"We are pleased to continue our long-standing cooperation with Omnitel, one of the most advanced operators in Europe. This agreement will give Omnitel complete flexibility to optimise their growing network, offering significant cost savings and seamless operation with their existing GSM infrastructure," says Pentti Kamppinen, Area Vice President, Southern Europe and Africa, Nokia Telecommunications. "Nokia's solutions pave the way for advanced data services, an integral element of the Mobile Information Society of the future."

With Nokia's solutions, Omnitel can substantially increase the capacity of their network to meet the extensive demand of the market, support new advanced services and increase the efficiency of network operations and maintenance.

Omnitel is the second largest mobile operator in Europe. It started its commercial service in December 1995 and at the beginning of July 1999 reached over 8 million customers. Omnitel bases its success on outstanding customer care and a great attention to innovation. Omnitel focuses on the market through two divisions dedicated to the personal market and to the corporate one, and now a special group of people will be committed to Omnitel 2000, the new strategic sector which combines speech recognition, WAP (wireless application protocol and Internet). The company has been a Nokia customer since December 1994. Omnitel employs over 6.000 people of which around 3.000 are dedicated to the customer care service. The GSM Omnitel network covers 96,1% of the landmass and 99,2% of the population. More information on the
