July 28, 1999

Beijing Nokia Mobile Telecom Ltd. (BNMT) and Yunnan Post and Telecommunication Administration (PTA) have signed an agreement valued at approximately USD 170 million for further expansion of the Yunnan GSM network in China.

Under the contract, Nokia will deliver GSM 900 and GSM 1800 equipment including its mobile switching centres, home location registers, base station controllers, base stations including the Nokia MetroSite solution designed for areas of dense call traffic, and the Nokia NMS 2000 network management system. In addition, a range of customer services including implementation, network planning, network optimisation and training will be provided.

The contract also includes Nokia's High Speed Circuit Switched Data (HSCD) solution, which enables data speeds of 14.4 kbit/s in a single traffic channel.

Nokia is the main supplier for the network. With this expansion, the capacity of the Yunnan network will more than double to serve approximately 2.3 million subscribers.

"We are pleased to continue our partnership with Yunnan to serve the rapidly growing cellular market in China," says James Lin, President, Nokia, China. "Nokia has worked together with Yunnan from phase one. This sixth expansion further underlines the confidence in our GSM technology in China.
