Nokia to Supply Equipment for 750,000 New DSL Lines to Covad Communications for Nationwide Deployment in the US

Extension of 1998 supply agreement valued at more than USD 100 million
Nokia (NYSE:NOK), a leading industry supplier of communications network solutions and services worldwide and a leader in the supply of digital subscriber line (DSL) products and services, has signed an extension to a supply agreement with Covad Communications (Nasdaq: COVD), for DSL network equipment worth more than USD 100 million.
Nokia will supply Covad; a leading broadband access services provider in the US, with equipment for up to 750,000 new DSL lines that will be deployed in business and consumer markets. With this contract extension, Covad, with Nokia equipment, can service over 1 million DSL lines. Nokia will provide Covad with the entire family of Nokia D40 Speedlink digital subscriber line access multiplexer (DSLAM) products including full rate ADSL (CAP, DMT), G.Lite, SDSL and IDSL line cards.
This definitive agreement is a continuation of the original deployment contract announced in January 1998. Since then, Nokia has supported Covad's rapid expansion into markets across the United States, including these major cities: Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Washington D.C., Seattle and Atlanta. Covad plans to provide DSL services in over 22 regions representing 51 MSA's (Metropolitan Statistical Area's) nationwide by the end of 1999.

The Nokia D40 Speedlink System enables service providers to deliver both voice and data to end-users via ordinary copper pairs. Highly scalable and flexible, the Nokia D40 Speedlink System offers multiple modular remote solutions that support both large and small-scale subscribers. Nokia Eksos B20 is the ETSI version of Speedlink.
