Nokia signs agreements with three China Unicom customers to enhance GSM mobile networks
July 26, 1999
Three branches of China United Telecommunications Corporation, (China Unicom) in Guangdong, Jiangsu and Shanghai have signed contracts with Nokia, for the delivery of a range of systems and equipment to further enhance and expand GSM mobile networks.
In total, the agreements are valued at approximately USD 30 million, with Nokia providing capacity and coverage upgrades throughout the three provinces. China Unicom will deploy the Nokia STM-16 SDH transmission system in Guangdong for its mobile network, as well as STM-1/4 equipment, a complete Nokia Network Management System and a full range of customer services.
Nokia will also supply STM-1/4 transmission equipment, Synfonet Access Nodes, customer services and the Nokia Network Management System for the Jiangsu network.
Beijing Nokia Mobile Telecommunications Ltd., one of Nokia's joint ventures in China, will supply base stations to enhance indoor and outdoor coverage for the GSM mobile network in Shanghai. The contract also includes the provision of the Nokia Network Management System and a range of customer services. All three expansions are expected to be operational before the end of this year.
The Guangdong contract, covering eight cities in the province, marks a first for Nokia to supply its STM-16 system to a China Unicom customer. Nokia's high capacity transmission solution is ideal for China Unicom to easily introduce future mobile-IP and broadband wireless services. The subscriber capacity in the Guangdong network will be increased more than three-fold to around 1 million.
"The expansion agreements will meet the accelerating growth demands of China Unicom's GSM services for several city-wide networks," says Malcolm Arnold, Vice President, System Business, Nokia China. "Nokia has enjoyed a good relationship with China Unicom for many years and we hope to continue working with them to further develop their networks to cater for the future introduction of enhanced GSM and IP related services."
