Nokia and Beijing TA, China, sign agreement for further expansion of Beijing dualband network

Beijing Nokia Mobile Telecommunications Ltd and Beijing Nokia Hang Xing Telecommunications System Co., Ltd - two of Nokia's joint ventures in China, and Beijing Telecommunication Administration (BTA), have signed an agreement for further expansion of the BTA network in China.

The value of the contract is approximately USD 77 million. Deliveries will begin in August this year and the network additions are expected to be operational at the end of next year.

The agreement will enable BTA to meet the continuing demand for GSM services in Beijing. Nokia will deliver GSM 900 and GSM 1800 equipment including its mobile switching centres, home location registers, base stations and base station controllers. Nokia´s innovative Intelligent Network platform and Chinese Short Message Services are among the value added services currently in use in the network.

"With the continued application of the innovative mobile technology supplied by Nokia, Beijing TA will offer a more competitive and flexible high quality value added services to our customers," said Vice Director Ni YiLin, of Beijing TA.

"We are pleased to continue our close co-operation with Beijing TA, which began more than five years ago, indicating the continuing growth of GSM in China," says James Lin, President, Nokia, China. "This expansion will support new features in the network such as Prepaid services."

Nokia and Beijing Telecommunications Adminstration began their co-operation in May 1994, with Nokia delivering their first complete GSM 900 network. BTA applied subsequent network expansions in 1995, 1996, 1997 and 1998. The BTA network was the first system to support international roaming among GSM networks in China.
