Nokia expands Indian R&D involvement
June 02, 1999

Expanding its R&D activities in India, Nokia has begun sponsoring Ph.D. students at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, and has signed new research cooperation agreements with the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.

In Delhi, Nokia will provide a Nokia Research Fellowship to the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology. Under the guidance of Professor Huzur Saran, the Nokia Fellow will research high-speed networking.

At the same time, Nokia, involved in research cooperation with the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore since 1997, has finalized research cooperation agreements with the Institute of Science's Professor Sundar Rajan.

"The volume of data traffic, multimedia applications, and timeless mobility are all driving the emergence of new communications infrastructure. Following on our history of investing in nurturing competence at the global level to meet such challenges, we are happy to broaden our activities in India by building close relations with leading institutions and we look forward to even wider cooperation in the future. We hope to help leading Indian institutions better meet the challenges of the new emerging broadband networks," says Dr. Sudhir Dixit, R&D Manager of Nokia Research Center in Boston, U.S.A.

"We believe that India's technical universities offer outstanding research and development capabilities, and their rigorous educational system produces engineers, who are clearly world-class as demonstrated by their alumni throughout the world. We anticipate continued expansion in India's universities, as well as in the Indian research and development market," continues Dr. Dixit, pleased by Nokia's commitment to developing technological resources around the world.

The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, established in 1963, is one of the seven Institutes of Technology in India created as centers of excellence for teaching, training, and advanced research and development in science, engineering and technology.

The Indian Institute of Science was established in 1909 through the efforts of J.N. Tata. Since then, it has grown into a premier institution of research in all the sciences as well as providing advanced degrees at the postgraduate level.
