Nokia at SuperComm: Nokia Pushes HDSL2 to the Limits
June 08, 1999

Nokia, a leading industry supplier of DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) products and services worldwide, today announced the introduction of HDSL2 products that support three different HDSL2 applications for its SpeedlinkTM and EksosB20 ATM/DSLAM platforms.

The availability of these new HDSL2 products will give providers a broader range of service capability and enable them to offer end-users a complete selection of spectrally compatible services.

With the Nokia HDSL8 Line Card, service providers will be able to provision the card to deliver either of two applications. The first of these will be a new HDSL2-based service that supports T1 payloads to end-users. Network providers accustomed to supporting T1 and fractional T1 services over legacy time division networks will now be able to extend these services through an ATM network, taking advantage of the full suite of Quality of Service (QoS) capabilities to be offered by Nokia in the same release.

The second of these HDSL8 applications will support ATM payloads over HDSL2 lines to end-users. This application will provide multiple rate transmission up to full rate HDSL2 over individual twisted pairs. The HDSL2-based line card will also support two inverse multiplexing groups of up to four HDSL2 lines each. To terminate the ATM payloads over HDSL2, Nokia will offer a "Single Line Service Unit," or SSU, that terminates a single HDSL2 line and an "Inverse Multiplex Service Unit", or ISU, that terminates one to four pairs of inverse multiplexed HDSL2 lines.

According to Jussi Ilmarinen, General Manager, Nokia High Speed Access Products, "Nokia is a company that has prospered through the advancement of standards-based technologies. Our approach to HDSL2 is no different. We believe that the capabilities of the HDSL2 PAM technology and support for HDSL2 in standards makes this technology valuable for our customers to employ in our Speedlink DSLAM in every way that is practical."

Both the SSU and ISU provide Frame Relay to ATM Network and Service interworking options n conformance with Frame Relay Forum FRF 5 and FRF 8 standards via a high-speed v.35 interface to legacy LAN equipment at up to 6.3Mb/s.

As part of its remote solutions, Nokia's third application will provide a direct HDSL2 interface between the Speedlink System and its 24-line Remote Access Modules (MicroRAM-24). This will enable service providers to employ ordinary POTS pairs between the CO and the MicroRAMs with no intervening electronics.

Nokia High Speed Access Products is a part of Nokia Corporation. The unit is a worldwide leader in DSL solutions. Formerly known as Diamond Lane Communications, Nokia High Speed Access Products was the first supplier to commercially offer an ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) based, multi-service, Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM). The Speedlink System enables service providers to deliver both voice and data to end-users via ordinary copper pairs. Highly scalable and flexible, the Speedlink System offers multiple modular remote solutions that support both large and small-scale subscribers. Nokia Eksos B20 is the ETSI version of Speedlink.

Nokia is the world's leading mobile phone supplier and a leading supplier of mobile, fixed and IP networks including related customer services.
