Nokia at SuperComm: Nokia announces support for iNow
June 09, 1999
Nokia Demonstrates its Commitment to Interoperability within the IP Telephony Industry
Nokia, a leading provider of end-to-end IP Telephony solutions, announced today its commitment to achieving interoperability in the IP telephony industry through its support for the iNOW (interoperability NOW) initiative.
Industry wide support of standards will allow service providers and enterprise to choose best in class, standards-based IP Telephony components.
Spearheaded by ITXC (Internet Telephony eXchange Carriers), iNOW is a broad-based, multi- vendor initiative aimed at achieving interoperability among IP telephony platforms. Based on the H.323V2 and the upcoming H.225.0 Annex G standard protocols for gateway-to-gateway communications, the iNOW Profile provides guidelines for IP telephony compatibility among multiple vendors.
"The iNOW initiative is an important element in achieving true interoperability in the IP telephony industry." said T. Kent Elliott, vice president and general manager, Nokia IP Telephony. "While many vendors have announced support for the H.323 standard, support does not equate to interoperability because of the broad nature of the current standard. iNOW is important because it takes the standards to the next level - interoperability, which is where the value lies for service providers. Nokia is committed to standards and interoperability. Our past experience has shown that only standards based solutions move the market to exponential growth. This is equally true of the IP Telephony Industry."
The momentum associated with H.323 is strong. Many service providers generally view it as the only viable standard by which interoperability can be achieved. Further, organizations such as TIPHON are working to solve important industry issues. Real time FAX (T.38), gatekeeper to gatekeeper communications (Annex.G), and a standard call detail record format are all important achievements necessary for ubiquitous interoperability. Vendors who are demonstrating their commitment to H.323 compliance, while delivering value added functionality via proprietary means will be the winners in the industry.
Nokia continues to actively participate in interoperability events including the recent demonstration of its H.323 capabilities at the InteropNet Labs at Networld+Interop '99 in Las Vegas. Other interoperability events where Nokia has recently participated include ETSI, Packet Cable, and IMTC.
Nokia IP Telephony develops and markets hardware, software products and client devices to provide complete IP voice networking solutions for telephone and Internet service providers, cable companies and corporations that want to offer new services or reduce information technology costs by integrating voice IP-based networks.
