Nokia at SuperComm: Nokia Propels Voice Over DSL With Speedlink Release 4.0
June 09, 1999

Traffic Prioritization and Interoperability with Voice Gateway Products Make Possible Bundled Voice and Data Services

Nokia, a leading supplier of DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) products and services, today announced hardware and software enhancements to its SpeedlinkTM Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM) that enable network operators to offer integrated DSL-based voice and data services. New advanced Quality of Service (QoS) features in the Speedlink 4.0 release enable voice over DSL applications.

"The new Speedlink Release 4.0, with its QoS features, offers compatibility with leading voice gateway products that give service providers the right combination for offering integrated voice and priority data services," said George Hawley, chief technical officer at Nokia High Speed Access Products. "Nokia's Speedlink platform is at the forefront for enabling next generation services including derived voice over DSL."

The QoS enhancements to the Speedlink System include additional QoS classes of service, user-defined queuing, expansive buffer sizes and congestion management. These QoS features allow service providers to offer reliable, real time bandwidth to small and mid-sized businesses that require setting priority levels for voice, data and even video traffic across their networks. Nokia has successfully completed interoperability testing of its Speedlink 4.0 DSLAM with voice gateway products from Coppercom, Jetstream Communications and Tollbridge Technologies. These voice gateway vendors are offering voice over DSL solutions that provide multi-line local telephone service and high speed networking for small businesses over a single copper pair DSL connection.

"Our focus since the Diamond Lane acquisition has been to continue delivering advanced functionality and consistently add value to the Speedlink platform," said Pekka Mielonen, Vice President of Sales, Nokia High Speed Access Products. "It's been full steam ahead, and now we're looking to enable integrated service offerings through support for voice over DSL."

The Speedlink Release 4.0 includes a new management system called DiamondView® TMN. This advanced element management system (EMS) provides a robust feature set and supports management functions for fault, configuration, performance, accounting and security. Using the industry standard Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) middleware, DiamondView TMN interfaces with Speedlink network elements and readily integrates into network service providers' legacy management platforms and operational support systems. DiamondView TMN supports a web browser-based GUI to enable service providers to manage their DSLAMs with low cost PCs in place of costly work stations.

Nokia High Speed Access Products is a part of Nokia Corporation. The unit is a worldwide leader in DSL solutions. Formerly known as Diamond Lane Communications, Nokia High Speed Access Products was the first supplier to commercially offer an ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) based, multi-service, Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM). The Speedlink System enables service providers to deliver both voice and data to end-users via ordinary copper pairs. Highly scalable and flexible, the Speedlink System offers multiple modular remote solutions that support both large and small-scale subscribers. An international version of the Speedlink System supports the ETSI and ITU-T compliant DMT line code options.
