Nokia 800PRO Sets a New High-Water Mark for Professional FPDs
May 05, 1999
The sales volumes of desktop flat panel displays are launched on a sharply rising trend.
The Nokia 800PRO puts Nokia up front in the most demanding segment of the expanding market, that is, FPDs aimed at professional users. Slimmest of the slim, the 18.1-inch LCD monitor combines superior image quality with a host of value added user features.
Superb picture
Based on the latest active matrix Super TFT liquid crystal panel technology, the picture of the Nokia 800PRO is formed by razor-sharp pixels. The picture is remarkably bright (235 cd/m2), has a high contrast ratio (300:1) and draws on a palette of 16.7 million colours. The result is a picture that is crisp, clear, free of flicker and drawn in rich, true colours.
The fast response time of 60 ms makes the Nokia 800PRO suited for the viewing of high quality video (moving) picture. The 18.1-inch viewable diagonal screen size means that the Nokia 800PRO offers the user the same working space as a 20.1-inch CRT monitor, only in a physically much more compact form.
Thanks to the wide viewing angle of 160 degrees, the user can freely position the display, and with the information on the screen readily perceived from any number of viewing points, the display is eminently suited for joint viewing by a group of users.
Professional user value
Professional users working with Windows and PC based applications will appreciate the possibility to choose resolutions smaller than the optimum resolution of SXGA 1280 x 1024. What is more, it is extremely easy to switch resolutions, thanks to the automatic scaling from native resolution VGA, SVGA and XGA to full screen.
In many of the applications where the space-saving desktop FPD comes into its own, such as banking and finance, the users regularly work with more than one computer systems. The Nokia 800PRO is equipped with a dual inputs, enabling it to receive either two analog signals or alternatively one analog and one digital signal. The Nokia 800PRO is future proof with respect to the PC/monitor interface standards.
The integrated USB Hub with USB audio provides for easy hot-plug connection and disconnection of all peripheral devices via the monitor hub. The high quality audio capabilities will come into their own in professional audio applications, an area under lively development.
The user interface of the Nokia 800PRO is a simple and elegant application of the acclaimed Nokia ergonomics. Picture parameters can be adjusted by means of an On-Screen-Menu. The OSM is easy to access and simple to use, thanks to the inclusion of the familiar Nokia NaviTMKey in the keypad that operates the OSM.
Slim, safe and environmentally sound
With the Nokia 800PRO, the benefits of the FPD become manifest. The monitor is only slightly larger than a standard 15.1-inch LCD monitor, let alone a CRT monitor with comparable viewing area. The slim and light overall design is re-echoed in the remarkably slim frame around the display area. Moreover, the elegance of this noticeably compact display has been achieved without any compromises on the performance.
The Nokia 800PRO features the Nokia SafetyPlex that shields the sensitive LCD panel from moisture, dust, grease and physical damage. Easy and safe cleaning prolongs the working life of the monitor. Apart from protection, the SafetyPlex is apt to improve the contrast of the picture.
The Nokia 800PRO is also protected against theft. The monitor can be physically secured by a cable or chain, and the security code prevents unauthorised use of the display.
The Nokia 800PRO will be among the first FPDs to gain the new TCO'99 approval for visual ergonomics, low power consumption, low emissions and low environmental impact. TCO'99 requirements represent the most stringent international standard for the ergonomics, safety and environmental compatibility of PC systems and equipment.
