Nokia to supply TETRA network in Catalonia, Spain

Centre de Telecomunicacions de la Generalitat de Catalunya and Nokia, with its local partner Omnilogic Telecomunicaciones, have signed a contract for the delivery of a digital TETRA professional mobile radio network in Catalonia, Spain.

The contract, valued at over EUR 12 million, marks a new TETRA customer for Nokia, further strengthening its position in Europe.

The network, to be in operation during June this year will enable secure, professional services for the Fire Brigades in Catalonia. It will later be taken into use by other emergency and security services. By the end of the year 2000, the network will provide coverage for the whole territory of Catalonia.

Nokia will deliver and implement a complete TETRA network including switches, base stations, dispatching equipment, network management system, terminals and customer services.

"Nokia was chosen as the supplier because of its ability to deliver a system with high level of advanced features and functions in multifleet environment," says Xavier Peiró Esteban, Managing Director, CTGC.

Centre de Telecomunicacions de la Generalitat de Catalunya (CTGC) is a legally independent public body and is the operator of the corporate network of the Autonomous Government of Catalonia. Its responsibility is the management of the telecommunication systems and services of the Autonomous Government of Catalonia, including all departments and dependent bodies.

Nokia TETRA system consists of digital exchanges, base stations, dispatcher system and network management centre. The infrastructure is supported by Nokia's mobile and handportable radio terminals.

In March 1998, Dolphin and Nokia announced a contract for the delivery of the world's first nationwide commercial TETRA network to the United Kingdom. In December 1997, Nokia signed a contract for the delivery of the world's first nationwide TETRA network for the Finnish Ministry of Interior. In June 1998, Nokia as part of the KNT consortium, was chosen to provide a TETRA nationwide network to Belgian public safety and security authorities with the project named ASTRID. In January 1999 Dolphin Telecom and Nokia signed a contract for the delivery of nationwide TETRA network in France. Nokia's other TETRA customers include Helsinki City Energy Company, ElTele Öst of Norway, TeleDanmark in the Netherlands and Austrian operator Well.COM. Nokia is participating in the UK-based Quadrant Consortium, which is designing and planning new digital radio services for use by the country's emergency services.
