Nokia teams up with Bridge to develop BridgeConnect
May 13, 1999

Providing real-time financial information service for digital mobile phone users

Nokia today announced a partnership agreement with Bridge Information Systems (BRIDGE) to provide BridgeConnectSM, a financial information service for digital mobile phone users.

Initially targeted at the Asia Pacific markets, BridgeConnectSM enables mobile phone users to access real-time financial information covering local, regional, and global currencies, stocks and indices while "on the move". BridgeConnectSM delivers the most recent financial information from around the world using the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP). WAP is an open, global specification that empowers mobile users with wireless devices to easily access and interact with information and services instantly. Nokia is a co-founding member of WAP Forum Ltd that is responsible for specifying the industry standard for wireless Internet and Intranet access.

"We believe that value added services such as BridgeConnectSM responds to the increasing demand among mobile phone users with the need to access business critical information while on the move. More and more, today's consumers are using mobile phones for data as well as voice communications. BridgeConnectSM brings the world of time-critical financial and market information to the fingertips of consumers, at their convenience. With the WAP-enabled Nokia 7110 media phone, for instance, consumers will be able to enjoy easy and fast access to information offered by BridgeConnectSM. Our partnership with BRIDGE brings together leading expertise in the fields of mobile communications and global financial information," said Nigel Litchfield, Senior Vice President, Nokia Mobile Phones Asia Pacific.

"We have seen an enormous growth in the appetite for financial data and news especially in the last few years. Individuals are growing as consumers and activators of information in the financial markets, and this partnership provides an excellent opportunity to reach out to them," said Tom Wendel, Chairman, President, and CEO of BRIDGE. "We are extremely pleased to be in cooperation with Nokia, a leader in its industry, to bring BRIDGE information to retail consumers."

"BridgeConnectSM meets the growing demand for the latest information anytime and anywhere, by allowing individuals to access global financial markets directly from their mobile phones. We believe that this service will provide a far greater range of value-added solutions to the mobile telecommunications community," added Mr. Peter Coker, Managing Director, BRIDGE Asia.

BridgeConnectSM provides an extensive range of up-to-date financial information such as stock indices, stock quotes, market movers (top gainers and losers), foreign currencies and news headlines. The type and content of financial information will be customized for each region and market. Users will also be able to track their investments through their own personal portfolios. The menu-driven interface allows quick and easy access to information. All data for this service is fully provided by BRIDGE.

As BridgeConnectSM is WAP compliant, the service is a readily available "out-of-box" solution that has minimal development costs for operators who want to offer this service to their mobile phone subscribers. Besides attracting new subscribers, this service aims to help mobile operators maintain and develop their existing customers. The service is also compliant with the existing mobile phones with Short Message Service (SMS).
