Nokia to supply VimpelCom with GSM network in Central Russia

Nokia and VimpelCom have signed an agreement for the supply of dual band GSM equipment to cover regions in Central Russia. Vimpelcom are a leading provider of cellular communications in Russia.


Nokia will deliver GSM 900 and GSM 1800 equipment including its mobile switching centres, home location registers, base station controllers and base stations. Nokia will also supply its network management system, customer services including implementation, commissioning and training services.

VimpelCom markets its services under the brand name "Bee Line" which had over 124 000 subscribers at the end of 1998.The VimpelCom Group operates GSM and Digital-AMPS cellular networks in the Moscow License Area, which includes the City of Moscow and the Moscow Region. The VimpelCom Group holds cellular licenses covering a total population of approximately 100 million (68% of Russia's population). VimpelCom was the first Russian company listed on the New York Stock Exchange in November 1996 (VIP). Vimpelcom has licences to operate in Moscow, Central Russia and regions in Caucasus, Volga and Siberia.
