Nokia and Astro supply digital multimedia systems in Malaysia
April 27, 1999
Nokia Multimedia Terminals and Malaysian service provider Astro today announced their co-operation to provide digital satellite services for broadcasting and interactive services to the Malaysian market.
The digital multimedia system (DMS) has been developed by Nokia in co-operation with Astro. It will be marketed as a package containing a technically advanced multimedia terminal with extensive memory capacity for future interactive applications: a satellite dish and a smart card. Today Astro offers over 30 high-quality television and radio channels, and in the near future a wide array of interactive applications will be available. The new Digital Multimedia System will be available from Astro dealers nation-wide from June 1, 1999
Kimmo Paaso, Vice President Sales Asia Pacific, Nokia Multimedia Terminals, commented: "Our co-operation with Astro represents a milestone in Nokia Multimedia Terminals' development in the Asian market. Our strategy is to offer multimedia terminals with advanced software solutions, which enable operators and service providers to offer value-added services and applications to their customers."
Mr C Y Chin, Executive Director of MEASAT Broadcast Network Systems Sdn Bhd, the operator of Astro, said: " We are delighted to have Nokia as our partner. Among the world's largest technology companies, Nokia is the first to be able to meet ASTRO's exacting standards on the DMS. After four months of truly joint efforts, we have realised the goal we set out to achieve."
