Nokia to deliver Asia's first GPRS network to KG Telecom, Taiwan
March 15, 1999

Nokia and KG Telecom today announced they have agreed on the supply of the complete Nokia General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) network solution - the first GPRS network to be supplied in Asia. Commercial GPRS services are expected to start in the year 2000.

With Nokia's GPRS solution, KG Telecom will provide true mobile Internet access to their subscribers - offering packet switched data through the enhanced GSM network. Nokia will deliver Internet Protocol (IP) core network infrastructure, including the Nokia Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN), the Nokia Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN) and the Nokia Charging Gateway.

GPRS provides data throughput rates of over 100 kbit/s and continuous IP connectivity. With this advancement KG Telecom will be able to create new services based on multimedia messaging, wireless corporate Internet, as well as remote control and maintenance applications.

"With the Nokia GPRS solution, built on their proven IP routing technology, we will be able to open up a range of advanced services for our subscribers," says Mr. Jimmy Yau, President & COO, KG Telecom. "There is great potential in the market for Internet based, advanced services. With this agreement, we will be at the forefront of that market."

"The delivery of the world's first GPRS network in Asia emphasises Nokia's position as a leading player in the supply of wireless data solutions, says Petri Pöyhönen, Vice President, GPRS Business, Nokia Telecommunications. "Not only is packet data technology a key building block in the smooth evolution to true Personal Multimedia services, the Nokia GPRS solution offers huge benefits to end users, enabling always-connected E-mail and other applications."

Nokia is the world's leading mobile phone supplier and a leading supplier of mobile and fixed telecom networks including related customer services. Nokia also supplies solutions and products for fixed and wireless datacom, as well as multimedia terminals and computer monitors. In 1998, net sales totaled FIM 79.2 billion (USD 15.7 billion, EUR 13.3 billion).
