Nokia and Polkomtel sign EUR 150 million expansion contract for the Plus GSM network in Poland

Nokia and Polkomtel S.A., the leading operator in Poland, have extended their long-term frame agreement for the supply of GSM equipment, in a deal worth approximately EUR 150 million.
Nokia will supply network infrastructure equipment to Polkomtel for the Plus GSM network, including Nokia mobile switching centres, base stations and base station controllers. In addition, a range of customer services will be supplied, covering implementation and technical support.
"Our network has been developing very rapidly and we need more and more technical infrastructure" says Mr. Wladyslaw Bartoszewicz, CEO, Polkomtel S.A. "The high quality equipment supplied by Nokia gives us the opportunity to gradually or systematically expand the range of our services. We are pleased to continue the co-operation with Nokia, which is the main supplier for the Plus GSM network."
"This contract is a continuation of the good co-operation that began between Nokia and Polkomtel in 1996," says Wojciech Pytel, Area General Manager, Nokia Telecommunications Poland. "This further expansion will maintain the high level of service quality and coverage for Plus GSM subscribers, as well as providing the operator with our expertise in customer service and support."
Polkomtel S.A. is an operator of a GSM 900 network launched on 1 October 1996. The Plus GSM network has more than 900 thousand subscribers and the population coverage of 91%. Plus GSM has signed roaming agreements with 125 operators in 73 countries. In 1998 Polkomtel was the first operator in Poland to introduce pre-paid services. Plus GSM subscribers have a wide range of services at their disposal, including free of charge voice mail.
