Expanding GSM in China - three new Unicom customers sign contracts with Nokia

Nokia has signed contracts with three new GSM customers in China.



China United Telecommunications Corporation, (China Unicom) Anhui, Gansu and Inner Mongolia branches have signed agreements for the delivery of a range of GSM solutions and services.

In total, the deals are worth approximately USD 40 million. Nokia will deliver GSM 900 equipment to all three new China Unicom customers, including its mobile switching centres, home location registers, base station controllers and base stations. A full range of customer services will also be supplied, covering installation, technical support, network planning and optimization.

"We are proud that China Unicom has chosen Nokia for these regions. This underlines the popularity of GSM in China," says James Lin, Vice President, Nokia, China. "There are approximately 21 million GSM users in China - it is the preferred digital mobile communications standard"

Two of Nokia's joint ventures in China - Beijing Nokia Hang Xing Telecommunications Systems Ltd and Beijing Nokia Mobile Telecommunications Ltd will supply the equipment for Gansu branch and the Anhui branch respectively.

With many technological innovations and industry firsts in China, Nokia is a leading supplier of mobile phones and network equipment to China's demanding telecommunications market. Nokia has seven production sites in China, as well as a global R&D unit and offices nationwide, employing a total of over 3,000 people. The subscriber capacity in Nokia supplied networks has already reached the 10 million mark.

Nokia offers total GSM systems, with everything from digital mobile phones to transmission and switching as well as extensive services and network management solutions for building, efficiently operating and developing these networks. With this co-operation, the number of operators to which Nokia supplies GSM technology increases to 82 operators in 38 countries. Nokia ranks as one of the world's leading suppliers of GSM networks.
